Transgender Day Of Rememberance
Today is Transgender Day of Rememberance where we remember all of our fallen siblings in the transgender umbrella who have been taken from this world too soon... all for the sin of being truthful and honest about who they were.
To you, my siblings, I raise a glass of whiskey. I see you, I mourn you. The world is darker without you.
"May ye find safe passage tae yer afterlives. May ye find the peace ye earned.
Hail tae the honored dead. May ye rest in Power."
The unfortunate truth is that while today we morn the loss of our fallen siblings, we must not lose sight of what we are fighting for. So many of us gave up everything to be truthful and proud and unapologetically who we are. In their memories do we carry on being the best versions of ourselves as we can.
Between 2017 and 2023 there was 263 recorded homicides of transgender people. Why does this happen? It happens because of Transphobia, xenophobia, general & radicalized fear, moral panic, religion, lack of education or ignorance, supremacy of some form or fashion. To some it's the idea that to be transgender is to be unnatural or an abomination to some misunderstood or misinterpreted outdated holy book. To some it's because, specifically male to female transgender individuals are traitors to the male sex and the fragile egos of lesser kings. Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminists TERFs go out of their way to mis gender and to scream foul against the Trans Community for one reason or another. 3rd wave feminists call women men and perverts who sneak into women's spaces to SA children.
I don't know all the reasons, or any of them, or why all the outrage with any - or all cetainty... Toss a dart at a grocer's list of 'em and there's your reason. There's a reason.
But all this needless death is not for a lack of educational & scientific material available to the average person... So it must be something else.
Oh... Wait... This is America and they're Americans... Silly me, I forgot. Americans take so little to give into hate & fear. It reminds me of how Germany convinced it's citizenry that their own trans, gay and queer population was a public menace in sexual deviance in the 1930s when Hitler came into power.
The fact is that while the trans community in the US is 1.14%, it's roughly 3 million people in the Continental USA of 331,449,281 people. The fact that the overly loud partisan Republicans and disenfranchised Democrats were led to believe the most heinous of ignorant lies about the community enough to sign for bathroom bills, genetelia checks, chromosome checks, birth certificate checks: without fact checking or educating themselves on the topic. And remember... The percent of the population who is registered Republican throughout the USA is 48%.
Because of the stakes in this election and after the Republicans won, the Trevor project reported a 700% spike in suicide hotline calls, many transgender siblings fleeing their homes or this nation out of fear for their lives, and more unreported cases of increased suicide rates.
For such a small percentage of the population in the United States, 617 anti trans legislation have been purposed nationally, voted on, some made into laws, some fought. In 2023, there were 35 homicides of transgender or gender-expansive people. 80% of these were with a gun. Black trans women face the bulk of this violence: in 2023, 50% of gun homicides were of Black trans women. According to everytown.org & the advocate. But that was 2023... Imagine what it will be like now that the elections swore in our first fascist.
With vitriolic rhetoric on the rise, dangerous far right gender and sex purist language from once allies turned pickmes & the outcome of the election effectively telling the 2slgbtqia community, the trans community, and women across the nation - 'this kind of abuse and violence and non care will reward the abuser with gaining the highest seats of power'; what can we do? We mourn the loss of our siblings in this long and greuling genocide. We take what's necessary to soothe our own nerves in comfort and reassurance. We find our peace and our serenity however we can. But like riding a bike, or riding a horse... if we fall off of it, dust yourself and get back up without giving into despair.
We are hated. The election just proved how many people have always been ambivalent towards us: at best.
It's the Day of Rememberance... Its tasteless, tactless, and disgusting that we are debated, politicized the way we are, but here we are. If I can say anything about resisting & rebelling this wave of hatred and moral panic against us it's to keep being you & keep being proud. Our existence is an act of malicious non compliance, civil disobedience. And we fight back by making sure we survive.
Please enjoy the rest of your night & happy Transgender Day Of Rememberance.
